THE ADOLESCENT INTERVENTION MODEL FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE
This innovative and intensive 13-week outpatient substance abuse program for adolescents ages 12-17 is designed to help teens develop the skills they need to decrease and eliminate the impact that alcohol/drugs have on their lives. This program includes the following components:
- Weekly individual counseling
To provide the adolescent with the necessary motivational enhancement needed to consider change. This therapy will include building self-esteem, improving support networks and decreasing unstructured time.
- A 3-session educational format about alcohol/drugs
The YoSAP program is a 3-session class designed to provide youth with basic knowledge about alcohol, marijuana and other drugs as well as anger management issues.
- 10 weekly sessions of group counseling
These sessions will focus on developing the skills necessary to resist alcohol/drug use. Topics include: basic refusal skills; developing a positive social network; understanding how to cope with high risk situations; using anger management skills; understanding friendships and loyalty and other related issues.
- Family counseling
Consistently shown to be a factor in reducing substance abuse, a minimum of two family sessions will be provided in order to improve family communication and increase understanding of the family system.
- Substance Abuse Family Education (SAFE)
This group will be offered weekly for parents and caretakers to provide them with education about alcohol/drugs and teach skills to support their adolescent in remaining alcohol and drug free.
- Supervised screening for alcohol/drugs
Testing will be provided periodically during the program to support the client in achieving and maintaining abstinence. Viewed as a support and not as a punishment, screens can help teens who are feeling pressured to use by their peers remain substance free.
